When You Have Suffered Abuse—Now or in the Past

By Cynthia Geisen
Each survivor of abuse must walk her or his own journey toward healing. Since what is helpful for one person may not be for another, finding your own way is part of healing. "Yet, you are not alone," states the author. "Many survivors of abuse have shared their experiences; some of their wisdom can be found in these pages. I hope it will be helpful to you as you embark on your own path toward a better life.

Helping Someone Heal After Experiencing Abuse

By Sam Stodghill
CareNote author Sam Stodghill writes, “If a friend or family member has shared with you their history of abuse, it is a sacred invitation … one that often has no set instructions or requests included.” He notes that the important thing to remember is that it is not an invitation to fix them, but rather an opportunity to offer support. And while there is no single “right” way to show that support, this CareNote presents readers with principles that, if followed, will help them show their genuine concern and love for someone who
truly needs it.

When a Relationship Seems Abusive

By Cynthia Geisen
Whether physical or emotional, constant or sporadic—abuse hurts. An abusive situation can be easy to get into, especially for teens just entering the world of romantic relationships. However, inexperienced teens may have trouble recognizing just what “abusive” is. This CareNote defines it plainly: “a relationship is abusive when one person acts in a way that disrespects, frightens, manipulates, or tries to control the other person.” This guide goes on to explain how teens who feel they are in such a situation can: discern red flags and recognize when the abuse is occurring, find help from a trusted adult, and ultimately, realize their personal value and eventually find a positive relationship of which they’re deserving.

Dealing With Bullying -- At School or Online

By Dan Grippo
Bullying (and bullies) come in many forms, from schoolyard taunts to online harassment. But what all bullying has in common is that it’s hurtful to the victim and needs to be stopped. How can teens deal with the tormentors they must face every day at school, and the ones that hide behind faceless online usernames? This invaluable guide offers steps teens can take to gain control of the situation and come out stronger in the end. Helpful sections include: “Find friends who don’t need to bully,” “Talk to your parents,” “Get the outside help you need,” “Focus on your personal goals,” and “Being the bully hurts, too.”
